Parak Gadang House is a residential project that presents a two-storey residential house located in Sumatera Barat, designed with a tropical concept that responds harmoniously to the region’s climatic conditions and cultural context. The design integrates passive design strategies and natural elements to promote thermal comfort, energy efficiency, and a strong connection with nature. One of the defining features of the house is the incorporation of an inner court garden, which serves as a natural element for spatial orientation, ventilation, and natural lighting.
The first floor accommodates the primary living functions of the house. Upon entry, the carport leads to a welcoming living room that is seamlessly connected to the kitchen and dining area, fostering a sense of openness and fluidity. This level also includes a master bedroom with an en-suite bathroom, two additional bedrooms for children, and a shared bathroom. The inner court garden not only enhances the aesthetic quality of the interior spaces but also acts as a natural ventilation shaft, supporting the tropical living concept. A high ceiling is introduced in the main living areas to facilitate better airflow and reduce indoor heat accumulation, further emphasizing the house’s environmentally responsive design
The second floor is designated exclusively for service functions. It includes a maid’s bedroom and bathroom, also a laundry/service room. This spatial zoning ensures privacy and clarity in functional separation between the residents’ main living spaces and the support areas. The service floor is efficiently organized to maintain ease of circulation while minimizing visual and acoustic disturbances to the rest of the home.
