Bahrul Ulum Mosque is a place of worship located within a senior high school complex in Jakarta. Despite its location within an educational institution, the mosque remains accessible to the general public, particularly the surrounding community, serving as an inclusive center for religious and social activities.
The renovation aims to enhance the mosque’s capacity and overall spatial quality. Key strategies include expanding the area towards the school’s field, reducing solid walls in the central prayer area to create a more open space, and upgrading supporting facilities such as restrooms and ablution areas to improve congregant comfort.
Architecturally, the renovation preserves distinctive elements of the existing structure, such as the roof and dome, honoring the mosque’s original identity. Additionally, solid walls surrounding the prayer area are replaced with semi-transparent partitions to optimize natural lighting, fostering a brighter and more open ambiance.
The semi-transparent walls implemented in the building serve not only as elements for natural lighting but are also designed to enhance passive air circulation. With sufficient openness, these walls facilitate air exchange between the interior and exterior, creating a cooler and more comfortable environment without relying on mechanical systems. Furthermore, this design strengthens visual and physical connectivity between indoor and outdoor spaces, making the building more open and welcoming as a public space.
Complementing this, a reflective pool is incorporated around the building area to support natural microclimate cooling. The water in the pool absorbs heat from the surrounding environment and, through evaporation, helps lower the ambient air temperature. This strategy not only enhances thermal comfort but also adds aesthetic value and tranquility to the building’s surroundings.
